Lithium-ion battery storage and protection

Lithium-ion batteries are reshaping industries as we know them, but they don’t come without risk. Protect your workplace to safely unlock the full potential of lithium-ion technology today.

Why invest in lithium-ion safety storage?

Knowing lithium-ion batteries are susceptible to thermal runaway (see below), which can cause fires or explosions, it’s important not to expose them to high temperatures and instead store them in a cool, dry place. However, extremely cold temperatures (below 0°C) can also compromise the battery’s components, so avoiding such conditions is equally important.

To keep your people and your premises safe, it's important to make a strategic investment in specialised storage solutions as well as responsible disposal solutions. These measures not only mitigate the risk of fire or battery explosions but also safeguard the lithium-ion batteries from external factors, such as excessive heat, that could potentially compromise their integrity.

Lithium-ion – what is it and how does it work?

Powerful battery technology fuelled by lithium-ion is changing the way many of us go about our jobs. But what is a lithium-ion battery and how does it work?

They’re in your phone and your laptop. Your electric toothbrush, and a growing number of medical devices. They power your doorbell camera and the golf cart you use to get across the green. You might not see a lithium-ion battery very often but they’re around you every day at home and increasingly in the workplace, where across industries they’re fuelling a new wave of innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. But how do they work?

LITHIUM BATTERIES

Let's get technical

Lithium-ion batteries consist of an anode and a cathode that store and release lithium-ions. A separator prevents electron flow, averting short-circuits. Moistened with electrolyte, the separator allows lithium-ions to move during charging and discharging. Negative and positive current collectors transfer electrons to an external circuit. During use, Li+ ions move from the negative anode to the positive cathode via the electrolyte, while electrons travel through the negative current collector. Charging reverses this process.

Despite their widespread use, lithium-ion batteries still face challenges such as safety concerns – such as thermal runaway, and their environmental impact has both positives and negatives. Ongoing research is focused on improving their performance, safety and increasing their sustainability.

What is thermal runaway?

Thermal runaway is an extremely dangerous phenomenon where a system, in this case, a lithium-ion battery, experiences a self-sustaining increase in temperature due to a chain reaction of events. The heat generated by the chemical reactions inside the battery causes even more heat, leading to a continuous rise in temperature. This can result in the battery venting and releasing toxic flammable gases, exploding, or catching fire.

What are the causes of thermal runaway?

  • Overcharging a battery beyond its safe maximum voltage.

  • Using the wrong charger.

  • Using a faulty charger unit.

  • Multiple over discharges followed by a charge.

  • Rapid charging that can lead to excessive currents.

  • Internal or external short circuit.

  • High and low temperature environments.

  • High moisture content.

  • Physical damage to the battery via crushing or puncture.

  • Manufacturing defects.
